Born on February 13 1974 in Copenhagen, Denmark, Gus Hansen is a professional poker player currently making his home in Monaco. Hansen turned to professional poker in 1997; however, before that time he was known as a world class backgammon players as well as a youth tennis champion. Hansen was a sport enthusiast throughout his youth and even competed in a number of outdoor as well as indoor sports. He moved to New York City in 2000 and attempted to make a living playing professional backgammon; however, he quickly turned toward other interests.
While Hansen is perhaps best known as a professional poker player, his love for sports clearly crosses over into his gambling as he is known to occasionally take private best on athletic challenges.
Hansen began playing poker while he was an exchange student at The University of California at Santa Cruz in 1993. During that time he gained a reputation as an aggressive player who frequently bluffs or raises.
In 2004, Hanson finished in 150th place in the 2004 Main Event. Two years later during the 2006 Tournament of Champions he made the final table; however lost on the first hand. Thee following year he came in 61st place in the $10,000 No Limit Hold’em Main Event Championship and won an impressive $154,194.
Currently Hansen is the only player in the world to have won three World Poker Tour open tournaments. He is also credited with winning the first World Poker Tour Bad Boys of Poker invitational event. He was inducted into the World Poker Tour Walk of Fame in 2004. Other successes include winning the inaugural Poker Superstars Invitational Tournament.
At the current time, Hansen has a featured spot in the Professional Poker Tour and has also won the biggest pot to date in the history of High Stakes Poker. Hansen has also appeared on Poker After Dark. To date, his winnings total more than $5,000,000.
